Frequently Asked Questions

Natural Gas & Propane — What You Need to Know

Do I need a permit to install or modify natural gas piping in DC, Maryland, or Virginia?

Yes. All natural gas and propane piping work in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia requires permits pulled by a licensed Gas Fitter. D&S handles permit acquisition for every project we undertake, and our team is licensed by the local code authority in each jurisdiction where we operate.

What is a Master Gasfitter and why does it matter?

A Master Gasfitter holds the highest license level for natural gas and propane piping work. They are authorized to design systems, pull permits in their own name, and supervise all installation activity. D&S principals GG Davis and Nell Ann Shelley hold Master Gasfitter licenses in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia — as well as WSSC Master Gasfitter certification.

How long does natural gas piping installation typically take?

Most residential appliance hookups or single-service installations are completed in one to two days. Larger commercial or infrastructure projects depend on scope, utility coordination timelines, and permitting. During our initial site consultation, we provide a written estimate that includes a projected project schedule.

Can you coordinate with Washington Gas or other utilities on my behalf?

Yes. We serve as your direct liaison with Washington Gas and other regional utilities for meter upgrades, service relocations, capacity verification, and infrastructure status reviews. Managing utility timelines is a core part of our project management process.

Do you install propane systems as well as natural gas?

Yes. D&S designs and installs both natural gas and propane piping infrastructure. We also perform conversions between fuel types — for example, converting an oil-heated building to natural gas or propane.

What is CSST piping, and when is it used?

CSST (Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing) is a flexible gas piping system well-suited for complex routing, tight spaces, and high-capacity appliances such as instant water heaters, commercial cooking equipment, and fireplaces. D&S staff are WARDFLEX certified for CSST installations.

Can you convert a home or building from oil or electric heat to natural gas?

Yes. We perform complete fuel conversion projects — from the street connection and utility meter through the interior rough-in piping to appliance stubs. We identify all code requirements for your jurisdiction before work begins so there are no surprises.

Do you install natural gas piping for standby generators?

Yes. We size and install natural gas or propane supply lines for standby generators, ensuring the line is properly sized for the generator's BTU demand and meets all local code requirements.

What counties in Maryland do you serve?

We primarily serve Prince George's County, Charles County, Anne Arundel County, Montgomery County, Calvert County, St. Mary's County, and Howard County — covering the full DC metro Maryland region. See our Service Areas page for a full coverage map.
